Bio: I'm a 62-year-old author/photographer/editor living in Wisconsin, who has a 25-year-old married son, Matthew. I've been married and divorced twice, graduated from three good Midwestern universities (Wisconsin, Iowa, and Missouri), after graduating from Aquinas H.S. in La Crosse. I've lived and worked as a journalist in London and Seoul. I've authored about 42 of my own personal books (including many photobooks), and have directed-edited 13 anthologies. I've been nominated for two Pulitzer Prizes (Journalism Commentary and Drama, Jan. 2011 and Jan. 2013, respectively). My works are in leading archives and galleries around the world, including various archives of the Smithsonian, the British National Portrait Gallery, the Wisconsin Historical Society, the National Assembly Library of South Korea, and the La Crosse Public Library Archives, among many. Two of my Presidential Campaign 2008 photos were on display Nov. 2011-Feb. 2012 in the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History Archives Center's Group-Exhibition "Gift of the Artist". My parents are David A. Fitzgerald-Marcou and Rose C. Muskat-Marcou, and I have six siblings, all of whom are talented. All seven of us grown children have our own children.

This was a kind of Little Rascals Day (informally) at La Crosse's Myrick Park. My son, Matt, sticks out his tongue at left as i take this pic, and another little boy is cheered on by his father, both boys riding in little boats, with an about-face sign posted nearby. I made this photo-portrait of the great Picture Post photojournalist Bert Hardy and his dogs, Lizzie and Kim, at the Hardy farmstead in Surrey, England, in November 1981. This photo-portrait is in the Photographs Collection of the British National Portrait Gallery (NPG) in London, with credit given to me at the NPG as its photographer and its copyright-holder. This photo-portrait is also the front-cover-image for my Feb. 2013 biography of Bert Hardy, These school kids loved dressing up like Indians for a special event day. I took their photo for the Adams County Times-Friendship Reporter newspapers, when I was the editor there in 1990. About 60 of my best photos from A-F are in the Permanent Collection of the Wisconsin Historical Society, among many hundreds of my photos and dozens of my books, etc. Also, I have one of two solo online galleries by a living photographer, among the 75 or so online photo galleries on the WHS Website. Two people appear to be a lonesome pair at the Smithsonian Stop in the DC Metro. The ceilings of that metro are incredible, when viewed and photographed more fully, which I've done a fair amount of since 2000. The little boy in my photo in NYC, April 2011, is looking for his shadow, which appears to be pretty much disappeared, perhaps because he knows the large shadows behind him (his parents') suggest some fairly large substance to them. However, small children have as crucial a spiritual, mental, and physical substance as adults, even if their physical dimensions sometimes seem reduced. Barry Alvarez is not only one of the best NCAA Athletic Directors in America, but for 15 years he coached the UW-Madison Football Team to unprecedented heights. In a 7-year span, he led the team to three Rose Bowl Championships, including back to back titles in the late 1990s, the first time a Big Ten Coach's Teams had ever done that. Also, though Alan Ameche had won a Heisman Trophy for UW in the 1950s, when Ron Dayne won his for UW at the close of the 1999 Season, he'd amassed more rushing yards in his career than any other college running back ever, and why he has been elected to the College Football Hall of Fame. The Great Dayne's record still stands, and Barry Alvarez has had a lot to do with all the success stories of UW Athletics, in recent decades. It's no wonder he too was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame. I once photographed a friend posing with Hooter Girls inside this building, a photo that's in the Smithsonian's Permanent Collection. However, my nighttime view of the building's exterior on 3rd Street, La Crosse, is equally dramatic. This photo of President Obama pressing the flesh of a crowd of young people has been published in many places, including on the front-cover of my photobook I took some photos for Rev. Bernard McGarty, a Catholic news editor in La Crosse, on Sept. 21, 1991. My main subject that day was Lord Robert Runcie. presiding at an Ecumenical Service at Christ Episcopal Church, on Main Street. As Archibishop of Canterbury, Lord Runcie married Prince Charles and Lady Diana at St. Paul's Cathedral in 1981. I've submitted this photo-portrait, and some others, too, from the Ecumenical event, to the British National Portrait Gallery, for inclusion in their Photographs Collection. A miniature horse and donkey ranch in Friendship, WI, provided me (DJM) with many good photos, on assignment for the Adams-Friendship newspapers, one day in 1990. Dandy was edging his nose up to the half-door top, to get some attention. Maybe he was looking to be fed and/or petted; maybe he just wanted his picture taken. I (DJM) saw this young woman texting or photographing, out of the corner of my eye, while I was waiting in the ticket-line at the La Crosse, WI, Amtrak Station, ca. 2010. I had my digital point-and-shoot camera turned on, and fired a quick hip-shot, half-turned-around, and turned back quickly to the ticket-window. Though this photo-portrait is tightly cropped, in-camera, it's not a bad shot, I'd guess. Since my cameras are generally set at slightly wide-angle, often I take good shots this close-up. But usually they're not cropped so tightly, in-camera. This is perhaps my favorite photo of a person playing a guitar, mainly because this busker was so engaged in the moment, playing his instrument with all his heart, for the bit of change I'd donate to him, which I did. I lens-gathered this photo-portrait just across the street from Covent Garden, in London, on an Autumn day in 1981. This image was printed for this scan by the Bert Hardy Darkroom, in 1986, when that firm was still known as Grove Hardy Ltd., I believe. I lens-gathered several photos of this disabled trumpeter, who played very well in Washington, DC, in April 2011, and collected donations honorably, including from me. I decided a few months' before my April 2011 visit to Washington, DC, that I would see about obtaining a photo-session with the famous newsman, author, and Presidential Debates moderator Jim Lehrer, a fellow Mizzou J-School Alum, though he graduated in the 1950s and I graduated in 1984. (In recent years, Leatherneck Magazine had said Jim Lehrer was, for three decades, the most visible Marine in the nation.) I contacted his assistant, Ms. Roma Hare, who sounded very positive immediately. When I photographed Mr. Lehrer on the set of the PBS NewsHour, I also photographed the other co-anchors there that night, and much of the production, too. My best photo-portrait of Mr. Lehrer (see above) was published on the MIZZOU Magazine Facebook Page. Mr. Lehrer and I conversed for 5 minutes as I made photo-portraits of him, just before he went on-air. He was funny and gracious, a true gentleman. He has since mainly retired from the NewsHour, and may be working on another book (he's written many). Thank you, Jim Lehrer and Roma Hare, and all the good people on your staff that night, as well. This young woman looked a bit lonely, sitting by herself in a Starbucks Coffeeshop in NewYork City in April 2011. I was meeting a theatre director who graduated from the same high school as me, and having something to drink with her, b/c I was very grateful to her for critiquing my best Irish play. The other young woman didn't seem to mind me photographing her, but maybe she didn't notice me, b/c I was not using my viewfinder much when I photographed the city that day. The I photographed this elderly woman along the road south of Manila in 1986. She was humble and polite, and made for a lovely image. I'm grateful to her and also for having been asked to write about her people and country for Korean Air's inflight-magazine, This fairly decent vertical view of mine (DJM) shows factory smokestacks, highway turnpikes, and auto parking lots, as I photographed them out the window of the Ramada Inn Motel I stayed in, during what I believe was my visit to Milwaukee for a job interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Newspaper, in early 1991. I didn't get the full-time copy-editing job there then, but I did begin work then as that Milwaukee paper's La Crosse Correspondent, a freelance job I held until 2006. I saw published about 150 of my reports for that paper during that period, including several front-page stories, about 70 bylined stories total, and about 75 news-briefs (no byline). I shared a byline or two with Pulitzer Prizer-winner Margo Huston, and fed my stories via phone in the 1990s to another Pulitzer Prizer-winner-to-be, at the time a reporter-copy-editor, Dave Umhoefer, a fellow Aquinas H.S. Alum, though DU is a few years' younger than me. I just caught this woman out of the corner of my eye, as she was striding quickly towards and into my camera, then by me. It was on the sidewalk running along Ground Zero, in NYC, in April 2011. I panned my camera quickly to take this view of two wheelchair riders and crowd, and later cropped it to a panorama. Although I like the original view, I like my posterized version of it a lot better. The two young men that are hard to ID in the wheelchairs are the Felt Brother, Jody and Chris, whom I've known for a while. The night I took this shot was July 4th, and everyone was heading to Riverside Park for the fireworks. I believe the year was 2005. Gorden Hampel, a former teacher, was also an artist and writer. For his writing, he took a class from me, periodically. He was also a superb painter, though I believe the poster seen with him here was a favorite collectible of his. If he created the poster himself, I don't think he let me know that. From Milwaukee originally, Gordon was married for about 60 years to his devoted wife, Elizabeth, before their passing.
