Lightroom is the professional photographer's essential toolbox, providing one application for managing, adjusting, and presenting large volumes of digital photographs. Lightroom 2.0 beta will feature enhancements such as dual-monitor support, localised dodge and burn correction and will be the first Adobe application to support 64-bit for Mac OS X 10.5 Intel Macs and Microsoft Vista 64-bit operating systems.'Photoshop Light room 2.0 beta provides early access to requested improvements over version 1.3 and continues our ongoing dialogue and open communication with the photography community,' said Tom Hogarty, senior product manager for Photoshop Lightroom and Camera Raw. 'We're excited not only for our existing customers, but also for the general public who will have an opportunity to take Lightroom 2.0 beta on a test run.' An improved layout in the Library module allows for a more intuitive approach to image organisation by simplifying the location of the features needed to find and filter photographs. A new feature called Smart Collections automatically updates collections with images that match desired criteria such as star-rating, keyword or other metadata. "The Suggested Keywords feature eases the task of keywording by making recommendations based upon keyword associations across a catalog as well as the use of keywords in neighboring images."Photoshop Lightroom 2.0 beta includes improved memory handling through 64-bit support for OS X 10.5 Intel Macs and Vista 64-bit operating systems. Additional enhancements in Lightroom 2.0 beta include support for a dual monitor configuration that maximizes a photographer's workspace and can be easily adjusted to meet a particular workflow. Additionally, the Develop module has been updated to provide the ability to correct specific parts of an image without affecting other areas. Now, fundamental photographic techniques such as dodge and burn can be performed using the same non-destructive approach, allowing unprecedented control within the Lightroom program.Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2.0 beta is available as a 30-day trial for free download on Macintosh and Windows platforms at http://www.labs.adobe.com/downloads. The new Aperture 2 release also includes support for these Hasselblad raw file formats. The free Leopard update includes support for Hasselblad raw image files in the 3FR, FFF and DNG format, created with any Hasselblad digital camera product with a 16 Mpix, 22Mpix, 31Mpix or 39Mpix sensor. This update means that Hasselblad raw files (3FR, FFF and DNG) will now be visible in Finder and able to be opened directly from popular applications such as Preview, iPhoto, and Aperture. An added benefit of the new OS X support is the creation of thumbnails for both FFF and 3FR files, enabling quick file inspection via Quick Look. This most recent news from Apple is yet another indication of the increasing compatibility of Hasselblad raw 3FR and FFF files in a wide range of photographic applications and workflows. Apple's raw file processing is very fast, and delivers images with a generally high image quality, resulting in a level of image quality sufficient for standard application. The quality of the images produced, however, will not equal that of those processed via Hasselblad's proprietary FlexColor or Phocus software, which provide a number of quality parameters not attainable from third party software, including: - Digital lens corrections - Moiré removal - Color handling - Noise reduction For users of Hasselblad digital cameras, it is also important to note the photographic advantages gained by using Hasselblad's Phocus software, which is delivered as an integral part of the camera system. Phocus works with Hasselblad cameras using the same integrated philosophy Apple has designed into its own products, and achieves similar benefits from native integration between software and hardware. Phocus provides maximum functionality and seamless integration between the camera and the photographer's computer system - much like iPod and iTunes, for example. This integration enables a range of beneficial features, including advanced job preparation, camera set-up, and camera control including focusing and live-view when working under tethered operation. In an industry where the search for ultimate quality is never ending, Apple and Hasselblad are proud to continue their collaborative efforts to provide the best range of photographic tools available, covering the multitude of workflows, conditions and challenges that face modern photographers. Led by Magnum photographers Chris Steele-Perkins and Simon Wheatley, this workshop is an exciting opportunity to build a body of work focusing on the topical regeneration of East London. The event is organised in collaboration with Calumet.Successful candidates will spend the week with both photographers developing visual language, technical and conceptual skills and individual photographic identity. Through an intensive week of progressive photographic shooting, the participants will produce an individual project under the same structure as professional assignments; shooting alone as well as under the guidance of the Magnum photographers. The participants will also benefit from using Wheatley's East London studio, which will be the base for daily reviews, group critiques, mentoring, editing sessions and for printing their images for a final exhibition. A midweek lecture by US based Magnum Photographer, Eli Reed, will provide inspiration and give the participants the opportunity to meet industry professionals at the Magnum Print Room, London. The images produced over the week will constitute an individual body of work and also be integrated into a group project, subject to feedback from all members of the Workshop. The process of editing and criticising the work produced will be a principal part of the learning process and conducted on a daily basis by the Magnum photographers and all participants. The week will culminate in the production of a digitally printed group exhibition at the Calumet Gallery in Euston. Friends and families of the participants will be invited to the Private View, along with Magnum photographers, staff and industry contacts.Requirements:The workshop is aimed at advanced photographers, both amateur and professional, who will be selected on the strength of portfolios submitted online to Steele-Perkins and Wheatley. These portfolios should consist of no more that 12 images and reflect the visual photographic identity of the individual. Portfolios should include projects shot over a significant period of time and ideally be edited to reflect photographic essays. A high level of photographic aptitude will be the essential criteria for participation and candidates should arrive comfortable with their equipment and ready to shoot.Selected photographic participants should have at least one, ideally two project ideas that they wish to develop during the Workshop. These concepts will be discussed at the beginning of the week and no restrictions are imposed on ideas, other than they must be conducted from the East London area. Due to the pace of the week, participants are required to produce and edit their work digitally. Limited equipment will be provided and we recommend bringing laptops for convenience. For those wishing to shoot using film, you may do so but at your own cost and on the required deadlines. Tuition:£750 plus VAT (does not include travel, accommodations or on the ground expenses) Applications: www.magnumphotos.com until Friday 2nd May. Established over twenty years ago, both the workers and clientele have seen many changes in this part of London and this project is an attempt to capture some of the observations, individuality and beauty of Soho.Drawing from their connection to and support of the creative industries such as music, photography and the visual arts, many of the clients are a roll call of well-known names, the idea arose as a creative alternative to waiting for your appointment. As the title of the project indicates many appointments run late - rather than flick through dog-eared back issues of magazines, clients were given disposable cameras and the brief to go out and photograph Soho.Over a period of two months and making use of over sixty disposable cameras (thirty colour film and thirty black & white film) the clients of Cuts have produced hundred of images of Soho. The resulting photographs present a view of this area that has quite possibly never been seen before - in turns mysterious, baffling but full of quiet, reflective moments.Throughout the project selected images will adorn the walls of Cuts and from 18 April for seven weeks, a further selection of images will be presented at The Photographers' Gallery as part of its In Focus display programme.Running Late is part of a wider Soho Projects programme of commissions, exhibitions and projects from The Photographers' Gallery. This project highlights the Gallery's commitment to working with and in London's Soho district. Running Late demonstrates how we can make use of photography in our everyday lives and how, through photography, people can represent their views on a specific idea or area.A unisex hairdresser, Cuts is located at 38 Frith Street, in Soho, London, and has appeared over the years in many films and photo-shoots.Exhibition Dates: 18 April - 15 June 2008Press View: 17 April 2008Location: 5 Great Newport Street http://www.dphotographer.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2008-03-20 http://www.dphotographer.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2008-03-20 Thu, 20 Mar 2008 15:20:57 +0000 In Focus Nikon extends spring cashback offer to include D60 Press release: Nikon UK is pleased to announce that its spring cashback promotion has been extended to include up to £60 cashback for purchases on any new D60 kit, until June 30th 2008. The new 10.1-megapixel DMC-FX500 features a 25mm ultra-wide angle Leica DC lens with 5x optical zoom. Standing out from the crowd, the new FX500 features a touch-screen operation on a large, 3.0-inch LCD, bringing new enjoyment to the digital photography and enabling easy manual operation. A variety of advanced functions, including advanced Intelligent Auto mode, HD motion picture recording and HD component output, and slideshows complete with music, also enrich the camera's appeal. The newly developed Leica DC lens with 5x optical zoom boasts an 25mm ultra-wide angle of view that captures almost double the recording area at the same shooting distance compared with a conventional 35mm lens. This advanced lens system includes 4 aspherical lenses with 6 aspherical surfaces, and a newly developed, unevenly thick concave meniscus Extra High Refractive Index Aspherical (EA) lens. Fitting an unprecedented level of wide-angle performance into a slim camera assuring minimal distortion even at its 25mm wide end, resulting in high picture quality. For more intuitive operation, the DMC-FX500 has a hybrid control system that combines joystick control with touch-screen operation. Basic settings can be directly controlled by the joystick, and other extensive ones are finely adjusted by touch or by moving a slider on the screen with the finger or an included stylus-pen. Users can set the auto focus and exposure at the desired part of the frame by simply touching the subject at that part while recording. In manual exposure mode, aperture and shutter speed can be adjusted by moving the slider. In playback mode, a new Easy Organisation menu is provided to simplify image sorting. The user can quickly select an image to view by scrolling the thumbnails located below the main window, and then edit the image using the same touch menu interface. Auto focus (AF) tracking is also new with the DMC-FX500. It continues tracking the subject even if it moves after the AF is set, which is especially helpful for catching active children or pets. The iA (Intelligent Auto) mode is a helpful shooting assist function that lets the user leave all the settings to the camera. Taking maximum advantage of this iA mode, users can go a step further to set auto focus and exposure on the desired subject by simply touching it on the screen. This kind of quick, easy rational operation is enabled by the new touch-screen interface. The advanced DMC-FX500 combines a futuristic control system with a host of specifications and even manual control to please a wide range of users. Dressed in aluminum panels having a hairline curve on the front, the new model is available in silver and black. http://www.dphotographer.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2008-03-18 http://www.dphotographer.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2008-03-18 Tue, 18 Mar 2008 17:18:30 +0000 In Focus onOne Software Previews New FocalPoint Plug-in Press release: onOne Software, Inc., previews today at WPPI 2008 its new software plug-in for Adobe Photoshop and Photoshop Elements — FocalPoint 1.0. onOne Software's FocalPoint is a selective focus and vignetting plug-in designed to help photographers easily blur and/or vignette areas of an image.Popular among professional wedding, portrait and commercial photographers, the soft defocused look typically produced in camera by using special selective focus or tilt-shift lenses, filters or vignetting hoods can now be created quickly within Photoshop using onOne Software's new FocalPoint. This new plug-in eliminates the need for photographers to purchase, carry and use the accessories mentioned above at the time of the photo shoot and simplifies their ability to produce these effects later in Photoshop."Our new FocalPoint plug-in gives photographers total control over how they apply creative focusing effects to their image after the image has been shot," said Craig Keudell, president of onOne Software. "It's just like having a lens inside of Photoshop. Users set the location of their 'sweet spot' of focus directly on their image and then control the amount, kind of blur used and even lighten or darken the edges quickly and easily."FocalPoint provides photographers with a way to create realistic depth of field control, plane of focus control and selective focus to any image after it is photographed allowing for more control and precision. The plug-in's unique FocusBug control has a tangible, hardware feel much like adjusting a lens. This special on-screen control makes it fast for a photographer to choose the "sweet spot" of focus either in a round aperture shape or a planar aperture shape and then control how much and what kind of blur they would like to add. Blur choices include a standard defocused look as well as a blur that simulates motion. This has a huge benefit over hardware tools like auxiliary lenses and filters because it allows the photographer to control the focus and blur after the image is taken, giving them more control and requiring fewer shots in camera.FocalPoint uses the same FocusBug controls to allow the photographer to simultaneously selectively blur as well as lighten or darken the areas outside of the "sweet spot" of focus. FocalPoint can also be used just for vignetting without blurring the image at all. In addition, the FocusBug allows users to tilt the chosen "sweet spot" aperture in 3D, simulating the tilt effect of a view camera or tilt-shift lens. This allows users to increase or decrease the amount of feathering or blur across a plane. And once a photographer has created an effect they like, they can save it as a preset so they can easily recall it. FocalPoint remembers all of the settings applied including the relative size and position of the FocusBug so users can apply it to similar images without having to make any additional adjustments. By using Photoshop actions to access a FocalPoint preset photographers can even batch process an entire folder of images. http://www.dphotographer.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2008-03-18 http://www.dphotographer.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2008-03-18 Tue, 18 Mar 2008 16:23:04 +0000 In Focus iStockphoto sponsor 2008 Adobe Design Achievement Awards Press release: iStockphoto, the world's busiest image marketplace, announced today that it will sponsor the photography category of the 2008 Adobe Design Achievement Awards. The Adobe Design Achievement Awards celebrate student achievement reflecting the powerful convergence of technology and the creative arts. Shooting in such extreme environments is not only physically and technically challenging but also pushed the cameras to their limit.'The RNLI aims to raise up to £20,000 for the planned RNLI Memorial in Poole through sales of a unique set of first day covers created by specialist producers Buckingham Covers. The RNLI Memorial will be the first official national tribute to the many RNLI lifesavers and fundraisers who have served the charity over the last 180-plus years - especially the 438 crew members who have died while saving lives at sea. Commenting on the Mayday - Rescue at Sea stamp issue, RNLI Fundraising & Communications Director, David Brann says:'It is an honour for the work of our volunteer lifeboat crews to be recognised in this way and we are sure Nigel's powerful images for the Mayday - Rescue at Sea stamps will help to raise awareness of and funds for the RNLI.'Royal Mail Mayday - Rescue at Sea stamps go on sale on 13 March 2008. http://www.dphotographer.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2008-03-13 http://www.dphotographer.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2008-03-13 Thu, 13 Mar 2008 11:39:40 +0000 In Focus Epson and Mike Figgis work together Press release: From 8th April 2008 Mike Figgis, photographer and film director will be on site at The Photographers' Gallery creating a cumulative portrait of Soho. Canon has released a letter on their support website to accompany the upgrade;AF Mirror Adjustment ProblemAfter a thorough investigation, we have found that some EOS-1D Mark III cameras may have an issue with the mirror mechanism, which is part of the autofocus optical system. This issue may cause inconsistent focusing accuracy or inconsistent focus tracking with moving subjects when using AI-Servo AF and continuous shooting modes, particularly in high temperatures. If the serial number on the bottom of the camera is between 501001 and 546561, it could be affected by the AF mirror adjustment problem, with the exception of cameras with the following serial numbers (click here <http://downloads.canon.com/cpr/software/camera/serialnumbers_adv.pdf>) which were manufactured with an updated mirror mechanism. (Additionally, all EOS-1D Mark III cameras with serial numbers higher than 546561 have been manufactured with the updated mirror mechanism.)Please note that the issue occurs only in some of the unmodified EOS-1D Mark III cameras within this serial number range. If your EOS-1D Mark III camera is operating correctly, it will not be necessary to have it repaired for this issue.Starting in late November, we will offer repairs free of charge for customers who have affected products and are experiencing this problem. We will announce additional details on our web site as soon as they become available.Updated InformationAfter the AF mirror Adjustment, including the updated firmware version 1.1.3, the EOS-1D Mark III AF function performed better in our tests than all previous EOS camera models.Canon strives at all times to continuously improve our products in order to provide our customers with the best performance and value. We are aware that some customers have raised questions about the performance of the EOS-1D Mark III AF system under certain conditions. We will continue to investigate, and look for opportunities to improve, the performance of the AF system to ensure the satisfaction of all of our customersWe appreciate your patience, and we offer our sincerest apologies to the customers using these products who have been inconvenienced by this issue. http://www.dphotographer.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2008-03-12 http://www.dphotographer.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2008-03-12 Wed, 12 Mar 2008 16:38:37 +0000 In Focus GOING DIGITAL GOES NATIONAL Press release: For the last four years, Going Digital has run its popular one-day photography workshops at stately homes and other venues throughout the East Midlands. The workshops, aimed at anyone who would like to improve their photography, are suited to all brands and types of digital camera from compact to SLR.The decision to expand nationwide was taken as a result of the excellent uptake from students, some of whom travelled from as far away as London and Scotland, mainly because they could not find comparable workshops offering such excellent value for money and catering for their exact needs locally. The workshops cater for the leisure photographer whose aim is usually to take better photographs of family and friends or capture professional-looking images of their holidays. Going Digital's Managing Director, Jan Slack, said: 'Time and time again our students tell us after attending our workshops that at last they can maximise their camera's potential and take photographs to be proud of. Our aim is to show them that good images are easy to capture. A key feature of our workshops is the end of session photo review where students benefit from the instant feedback from their digital images to evaluate improvements made throughout the day'.New areas for the workshops in 2008 include the South-East, Yorkshire, East Anglia, North Wales and the North-West at venues from historic houses and gardens to country parks. It seems that photographers are increasingly being stopped by police from taking pictures in public places, and details of this latest incident appeat in the latest issue of the BFP's monthly Market Newsletter. An increasing number of members have sought help from the BFP after facing what they consider harassment. In many cases, police are using stop and search powers without reasonable cause to prevent photographers - both amateur and professional - from taking pictures."The simple fact," says John Tracy of the Bureau of Freelance Photographers, "is that police do not have the right, except in exceptional circumstances, to take pictures in public places." http://www.dphotographer.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2008-03-11 http://www.dphotographer.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2008-03-11 Tue, 11 Mar 2008 17:05:56 +0000 In Focus Red Dot Cameras opens Red Dot Cameras, the UK's newest venue for the Leica aficionados, is now open for business, ready to offer an unparalleled experience for every Leica lover, with interests that range from the classics of yesteryear, through to the latest digital technology of today. Leica would like to take this opportunity to clarify its position and inform you of immediate activity.A new reward scheme has now (10th March 2008) been introduced in the UK, whereby purchasers of the acclaimed Leica M8 and a selected lens are eligible for £500 cash back. The scheme runs until the end of May 2008 in authorised dealers only and also incorporates the Leica MP and M7 film cameras.Launching the scheme, David Bell (Managing Director, Leica Camera Ltd., UK) commented, 'There has been much recent speculation concerning the M8, but we can confirm that the current design remains our most important product for 2008/9. As ownership increases, users seem to really appreciate that it is a faithful reproduction of a true classic M, but in digital form.'Bell continues, 'the award winning photographer, Tom Stoddart is now to use two M8s on a major EU project. He is a life long Leica film M user and is already in praise of the quality of the M8 digital and its design, which enables him to continue his discreet, intimate and mobile photographic style. It is interesting to note that Tom doesn't concern himself with camera specifications: for him, the image is all. In this respect, Leica's specific CCD sensor design, integrating a very thin cover glass which avoids undesired refractions and the combination with additional UV/IR filters, is getting the very best out of the fabulous M lenses. Similarly, Users are more than happy with the results of the 18 x 27mm CCD size which was a major factor in replicating the true M body size and shape. WHTour.org is an independent non-profit organization documenting the UNESCO World Heritage List with a series of remarkable panographies. The site is the work of Belgian photographer, Tito Dupret.During the 7 years already committed to this valuable project, Dupret has helped produce some of the most impressive panographies ever seen of some of the most historic, rare and often unreachable sites from across the planet in full-color, full-screen splendor. From China, Tanzania, Indonesia, Iran and India to Egypt and now the Middle East, each of Dupret's panographies is produced with the aid of REALVIZ panorama assembling software, Stitcher Unlimited.REALVIZ Stitcher is a photo stitching and image assembling software for the creation of professional-level panoramas and 360° virtual tours. Starting from digital images, the software's powerful central automatic stitching engine enables a diverse range of users to create high-quality panoramas, large-format prints, matte paintings, reflection maps and textures for film & television, as well as dynamic virtual tours for the real estate and tourism industries'For the last 15 months I have not published a single image,' explains Dupret. 'Around 8 of these were spent shooting 80 new World Heritage sites. An additional 7 months were needed to build the new site and to post-produce the 'panographies' - 360 degree imaging. The site now includes significant new areas, including the Middle East and East Africa. These are regions, which currently attract a lot interest in the news, but unfortunately often not for the right reasons. What we want to present is a peaceful message on the rich heritage and natural beauty of these regions.''I have been using REALVIZ Stitcher since 2001,' says Dupret 'and it has always been a pleasure for me to discover the latest versions of the software, as each one has helped me to reduce the time spent in post-production when producing my panographies. In this way, I can capture as many locations as possible within a limited time frame, and maximize our documentation of the World Heritage sites. We are very proud to have REALVIZ on board as an official sponsor of the World Heritage Tour."'We are delighted to continue our support of Tito and the World Heritage Tour project,' adds Dominique Pouliquen, REALVIZ CEO. 'We have seen the site grow gradually over the last 7 years, and are proud to be part of such an important contribution to the documentation of such rare and significant sites.'In addition, the site is now available in French as well as English. There is also a powerful new search engine, different viewing formats, including QuickTime® & Adobe Flash Player, plus a Print mode.'There are also cubes that you can print, cut, fold and put together with your kids on your knee,' explains Dupret. 'This is a fabulous way to help them learn about what World Heritage is.'For further details on the World Heritage Tour, visit: www.world-heritage-tour.org.For further details on REALVIZ Stitcher, please visit: http://stitcher.realviz.com, or contact sales@realviz.com. http://www.dphotographer.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2008-03-04 http://www.dphotographer.co.uk/blog.php?blogdate=2008-03-04 Tue, 04 Mar 2008 17:40:47 +0000 In Focus Getty launch dedicated Olympics website Press release: Getty Images has today announced the launch of its new, dedicated Olympics website (www.gettyimages.com/olympics) which includes 112 years of iconic sporting imagery. The series, entitled 'Outside In', culminated in an exhibition at Northern Print, centre for contemporary printmaking - a fitting choice of venue as the building itself was designed by MGA and featured within the exhibition. The primary concept of the collection was to explore the division of space between inside and out, with each image seeing the exterior merged with the interior, amplifying boundary distinctions between the inside of a building and its outwardly façade.Over 3,000 images were submitted for the Fujifilm competition, from which judges chose just 35 to receive a Merit Award. The judging panel was made up of Jon Levy from Foto 8 Magazine (www.foto8.com), Michael Olu Odukoya from Kilimanjaro Magazine (www.kilimag.com) and Jerry Deeney from Fujifilm Professional. This is the second year that Distinctions has been a 'film-only' award now attracting 30% more entries than in 2006. Since its initial launch in September 2002, over 25,000 images have been submitted, making it one of the most prestigious professional photographic awards in the UK.Tim Mosedale, Director of MGA, said: 'We are delighted that Jill has been recognised in this renowned competition. The photographic work that was produced to celebrate ten years of MGA's projects provided us with a really inspiring exhibition, which attracted many visitors to the gallery. Working in the practice of design, we believe there is an obvious synergy with the arts world, and will continue to work closely with artists to further enhance our architectural output and benefit our staff and clients alike.' Jill Smith previously took residency with MGA under the Arts Council Placement Programme. In addition, MGA has also worked with artist, Angela Hughes, on a series of art classes for staff, designed to encourage the use of traditional skills to further lateral thinking. For further information about MGA, contact 0191 261 7444 or see www.mgarchitects.info.
