Belly Rub A La Kolibri by Katja Zuske
Hummingbirds are frequent visitors to my backyard and I just love them - they are little birds with an immense attitude! I sometimes even get buzzed by them... their way to make sure we know the hierarchy in the yard! A couple summers ago, this one came to my backyard fountain once or twice a day to take shower. I watched this activity for some days and then decided to try and capture it. It took weeks of trial and error to get this moment when the bird was there at a time of the day when the light was right and both the equipment and photographer were ready. I decided not to use a flash but try it with natural light and a speed high enough to freeze the water stream to droplets.

Stunning image, and very well photographed. Excellent colour and sharpness, especially considering how very fast these birds can move. Not sure I like the frame and title, I think the image is powerful enough without a title, but that's a matter ot taste. Cheers,Steve -

Thank you all for your comments, much appreciated. John, I shot this with a 200-400 VR lens at 400mm. It's a monster lens when it comes to weight but I love the possibilities it creates. The VR is great to have but I need to remember to shut it off when putting it on a tripod... As for the D300, I thought a lot before spending the money but have not regretted a single second. What a quantum leap from the D70!! -
