Ice Axe by lee beel

Ice Axe. This icicle was photographed during the recent winter weather. It had just started to melt and every few seconds a drop of water would form on the tip before falling off. I captured a few shots of the drop forming and falling but I prefer this photo because the sharp point is visible. I like how you can see the air bubbles trapped in the ice and the strange shape that the icicle has formed. I had to use extension tubes to allow me to work close to the icicle and I kept the camera sensor parallel to it so that I could choose a wide enough aperture to blur the background but still keep the ice in focus. Canon 5D MKII. Canon EF L IS 70-200 plus extension tube. 0.7sec @ f4 @ ISO400.
