Reredos by Simon Bull

Turn around from the view in my image 'The Ceiling Above' and you are greeted with an equally stunning view! The Reredos or Great Screen behind the high altar was begun in 1455 and took 20 years to carve. The original figures were destroyed during the Reformation and today's figures are actually 19th Century copies. The mortuary chest on the presbytery screen is one of six in the cathedral which hold the bones of several Saxon and Danish monarchs including King Canute. The ceiling's not bad either!!
