Smokestacks, Turnpikes, & Parking Lots, Milwaukee, Wi, Ca. 1991, Photo By David Joseph Marcou by david marcou

This fairly decent vertical view of mine (DJM) shows factory smokestacks, highway turnpikes, and auto parking lots, as I photographed them out the window of the Ramada Inn Motel I stayed in, during what I believe was my visit to Milwaukee for a job interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Newspaper, in early 1991. I didn't get the full-time copy-editing job there then, but I did begin work then as that Milwaukee paper's La Crosse Correspondent, a freelance job I held until 2006. I saw published about 150 of my reports for that paper during that period, including several front-page stories, about 70 bylined stories total, and about 75 news-briefs (no byline). I shared a byline or two with Pulitzer Prizer-winner Margo Huston, and fed my stories via phone in the 1990s to another Pulitzer Prizer-winner-to-be, at the time a reporter-copy-editor, Dave Umhoefer, a fellow Aquinas H.S. Alum, though DU is a few years' younger than me.
