This picture is absolutely incredible, from the sheer wonder and beauty of the stars, to the marvelous composition of colours and the rainbow effect they appear to have. Great photo Christian 5* -

Christian, this is a very unusual, perfectly executed picture which deserves the POTW very much. I do hope you take notice of this award, if not now then at a later time, haven't seen you in many months... -

Christian, well deserved POTW, and as I understand it: a very difficult shot unless one has the right equipment and your know-how! Five stars of course for the many stars you have presented so well. Thank you for bringing the heavens to us all.... Best Regards Charles -

Sorry James for the late reply, I got really sick lately. Thanx for your interest in my work mate. For this one, I used a fisheye 10.5mm f2.8 on a D70 piggybacking my telescope that I used for guiding so that you can eliminate the earth spin, hence getting stars as opposed to startrail. However, if you have a fast wide angle lens and a camera that operates at high ISO setting (1600+) you can get shots similar to this provided you don't exceed 5 to 10 sec exposure (whether you shot close to the celestial pole or not)and get away from the need to guide your mount. However, you'll get more noise that you can postprocess. Cheers, Chris -

Hey Guy, now that I'm back from Vietnam, I'm getting ready to spend more time out to bring in some more of this. Thank you very much for your comments. Chris -

Thank mates, I'm very glad that you enjoyed this. Soon, after my trip to Vietnam, I'll get back with more of it. Take care. Chris -

Don't worry Dave, it is not that bad. Once you know what to do, it is often easier to capture night shot because you don't have to worry about lighting variations and direction, as well as depth of field. I'm glad you like it. Thanx Ollie for your constant support and mind openess. Cheers, Chris -
Ollie Bell
An awesome shot Christian, you are proving to be a dab hand at night photography. Top marks, rgds Ollie -
Dave O'Callaghan
absolutely glorious, and no simple process by the sound of it... a real cracker!, 5* Dave -

Good day Dom. First, I think the lens you used is perfect for this type of application. The problem is the camera. The D80 has 4 millions more pixels than the D70 on the same chip size. Therefore, the pixel pitch of the D80 is a lot smaller, inferior to 7 microns. So, during the same time exposure, the D80 gathers less light than the D70 and produce more dark current. You can obviously apply noise reduction but then you will get rid of all the details that are below the noise treshold. It is even worse with the D2x with its 5.5 microns pixel pitch. This is why I kept my D70 for astrophoto. I had address this issue to Nikon Canada 2 years ago, telling them then that I would hope that if they were to come up with a full frame body, to not do the mistake to crank up the pixel number. And I'm very happy that the D3 came out with 12Mp, because it means big pixels, very sensitive, and very low noise. Perfect for astrophoto, especially with the live view which will make such a difference when comes the time to get a perfect focus. Anyway, this the reason why I never use my D2x for this type of work; the D70 being a legendary camera for its low noise. In short, try the lowest ISO, with the least noise reduction, shoot raw at around f4 to f5.6, and go by trial and error as far as time exposure is concerned. If you have an equatorial mount with a clock drive to counter the earth rotation, then do multiple short exposures and stack them in CS2 in order to increase the signal to noise ratio. If you want to know more, don't hesitate to drop me an E-mail through my website and it'll please me a great deal to give you more advice. Cheers mate. Chris -

wow awesome! over the last couple of nights i have had clear sky and tried to take photos of it with my sigma 10-20mm f4 lens but just cant get any good images without massive amounts of noise. do you have any other tips? -
