Chris, I've heard the ePhotozine comparison before. The only reason I don't like it is that it's an apples and oranges comparison. At ePhotozine, the site IS the product. That's what they're selling. Here, the mag is the product and the site is provided as a service for those reader who wish to take advantage of it.
But the reason I'm posting here is because I have a suggestion of my own. It's one that will accomplish most of what people have been saying they want, but which would not actually impose any limitations whatsoever- over and above what the members would impose on themselves. It's beautiful in its simplicity, really. Here it is:
You know all those images we have in our galleries- the ones who have no rating, and therefor are not figured into the gallery rating? Figure them in. Count the images with a zero rating as just that. The gallery rating becomes the total number of ratings received, divided by the total number of images in the gallery.
Among many other positive benefits, this would mean that uploading an image would initially lower one's average gallery rating. To recoup that average, the image's rating would need to meet or exceed the gallery's initial average rating. I dare say that MANY of the members here would become much more selective in the number and type of images uploaded. I would also wager that the overall quality of the images in the gallery would improve. Meanwhile, new members who have no gallery rating could still feel free to upload as they like.
Problem solved, no limits imposed. Next question.
