SELLING MY PHOTOS, HOW MUCH SHOULD I ASK FOR?

Postby gullwinghead on Tue Dec 19, 2006 8:07 pm

I have had a request from a book author to use some of my photographs.

Has anyone got any advice on how much to ask for?

I am guessing the rate depends on how many copies of the book he is going to have printed, but I am unsure how much to ask for each photo and how much the amount of times they are used affects the price.

I have looked on the web but the phrase "how long is a peice of string?" seems to apply, I've seen prices from 30 cents to £2500.

Any advice gratefully received, cheers.

if you have a look at Alamy and pick any photo, click on the purchase tab and enter the details, ie how many copies, for how long, image size etc. The resulting price is what I would charge!

I would suggest having at look at the NUJ website. They have a downloable/printable guide for freelance photographers which includes the going rates for imagine sales within different types of publication.
The camera is but a tool, the photographer is the person behind it.
