Tamron 28 - 300mm The Review

Postby Sticky on Fri Aug 08, 2008 12:02 pm

Good Afternoon all, Tom Knight here one of the lucky winners of the Tamron Review competition.

First off I just wanted to thank Dave and Mike from www.thetrainedeye.co.uk for an informative and entertaining day out in Henley on Thames it was thoroughly enjoyable.

Secondly a big thank you to the Digital Photographer team for the organisation and effieciency that saw the event being a success.

The idea from now on is for me to spend some time taking some shots using the new lens, and then to offer some form of feedback to you guys and gals!

I will be shortly be posting some photographs that were taken on the day so please enjoy and post away with any feedback/questions.

Tom

Can't wait to see your images! Well, to be truthful, I have had a sneak peek - and they look fantastic - well done :D

Keep checking back here to see some of Tom's images from our day out, or see issue 74 of the magazine, where Tom's work will be in print.

Shot Details

Postby paule on Fri Sep 05, 2008 10:47 am

Tom,

I think it would really help if you added all the shot details to the images in your gallery. It is after all a review of the kit. More info can only benefit forum & DP site users when considering the merits of the lens.

cheers

Paul.

I've been really pushing the lens recently, just been using the zoom to its capacity as well as utilising the vibration control.

I'm still very impressed with the vibration control, even when your at full zoom it is easily stable and can take images that are still and sharp. Normally this required the traditional tripod st up etc...

very coool!!

I've mentioned this before, but I am very impressed with the Vibration Control and although I have never used any other VC lenses until this one, I do think that this is a great feature.
It is allowing me to just "wander" with one camera and one lens and not to be weighted down with a full camera bag, especially when on a country walk at dusk/sunset. I no longer have the frustration of seeing an interesting shot but feeling I cannot do it justice because I need to set up a tripod. With this lens I can utilise the VC and get a good result.

I am not in to testing lenses for maximum technical specifications etc. I am more interested in the picture content than whether or not "Its a bit soft at 300mm but at 220mm at f6.3 at 320ISO it's a bit better." Therefore any criticisms of this lens I have read on other forums have been outweighed by the fact that all in all, this lens can be used as really good "do it all" lens.

It is compact and light, the VC is great (even my dad can hand hold it at full telefoto!!!) and in my opinion well worth having a look at .

I will be adding some more photographs soon so keep checking back in the gallery, I will also try and include some technical specs. of the photographs that I have taken.
