First when I saw the photo, I thought; "Is that photo taken in some woods or something!?" due to the curly background the hair produces, in the right side. Then I saw the square to the top right, and realised that it wasn't the case. But im kinda confused, to be honest :p

IMO there are things in the photo which doesn't go hand in hand; the straight lines her cheek makes and the square, I talked about before, contra the curly hair to the right. It looks a bit confusing, I think. :)
So all in all, I dont know what to think about the background. But I guess it was all on purpose? - So please tells us a bit about what thoughts you did before the shot. :)
Speaking of the hair, I think its a shame too that it appears on her skin (on the shoulder). I would recommend keeping it away of the skin. And why are her bangs that straight when the hair is a mess next to her shoulder?

Her lipstick however, is pure awesomeness! :D I really like the glossy reflexions from the lights to the right. Superb achieved.
The skinstones are cool aswell, and im nearly 100% sure that you retouched her as hell on the skin (or some makeup artist did the job for you :p), but I think the result are great.
Personally I don't like when people are over photoshopping the skin and makes it look 'porno'!

Let us see some more! :) Your really good a this. Keep it up, sianerobertson.

I like the lighting, but can't help but think i want to see a bit of the other side of her face. Only a tiny bit, perhaps almost entirely in shadow, but that's just me.

It also looks, to me, that the skin is perhaps a little too soft. The processing looks good, but i prefer there to be a little more texture in the skin.

I agree with the hair on the shoulder... my mistake not to have removed that...

This image was actually part of a fashion shoot for a blacklisted_site, but I wanted to take a close up as I loved the contrast that the lighting made on her face. I did wonder whether to include some detail on her face, but it didn't look right- so I made it darker to put completely in shadow.

She is actually wearing a large black hat- so its not straight 'bangs' - its a hat! And the curly hair is just popping out underneath!

As for post process... I do like the look of flawless skin and sometimes it can look a little overdone- but I do wonder, if John Farrar put an image up on here whether people would say the same thing!? LOL! I love his work, but to me, a lot of it looks heavily post processed. So Its each to their own I guess!

Please do keep comments coming in... I like constructive criticism and its great to keep learning and progressing! :)

A studio is an ideal place to perform a fashion shoot because photographers can easily control lighting and stabilise conditions. If you are shooting in a studio environment remember to meter all areas of the scene to avoid unwanted shadows and the use of a separate light meter rather than the one in your camera, will offer a more accurate reading.
