A call for media...

I wasn't sure whether I should post this in the Helpdesk section of the forum or somewhere else. But since I am essentially asking for your views, I thought I might as well put it here. Be patient with me, I am first going to give as brief a background info as I can.

In 2019, the organization where I work as a web consultant, the International Labour Organization (http://www.ilo.org/) turns 100. Right now I just started working partially as a web/media consultant for a unit called The Century Project within the Organization. I've been asked to redesign and generate ideas for content for a new version of the website which will come online starting next year. The purpose of this Century Project is centered around three things:
- Commemorate the 100th Anniversary
- History of the Organization and its relation to what we call 'The World of Work'
- What the Organization has achieved, done and what it will do in the future

The ILO is the international organization responsible for drawing up and overseeing international labour standards. It is the only 'tripartite' United Nations agency that brings together representatives of governments, employers and workers to jointly shape policies and programmes promoting Decent Work for all. This unique arrangement gives the ILO an edge in incorporating 'real world' knowledge about employment and work.

The Areas of Work (a.k.a. Topics) for the Organization consists of: (full list here: http://www.ilo.org/global/topics/lang--en/index.htm)
- Gender Equality
- Child Labour
- Youth Employment
- Forced Labour
- Green Jobs
- Migrant workers
and so on.

One of the ideas I am discussing with the people I work with is sending out a call for media, from photographers, videographers, artists, etc. of all ages and skill levels around the world. Photos, videos, artwork, etc. that relate or portray any of the 'Areas of Work'. I am also trying to see if the Organization is willing to turn this kind of request into competitions. (e.g. a Photo contest, Video contest, Art contest) I think there is a fair chance it will happen either next year or sometime in the future. I think giving away something like a (perhaps more than one) D3s or 1D (or something like Red cameras for the video contests) as a prize is more cost effective than hiring photographers around the world to take photos. I can't give 100% promise that these contests will occur for the time being, but I am keeping an optimistic view, just need to convince the senior administration.

So in the meantime, if any of you are willing, I am asking if you would like to send your photos that you think relates to one of the 'Areas of Work' or 'Topics' of the ILO. It would be shown on our website with appropriate credits given. I wouldn't be able to buy 'photos' or other media of course, we're an International non-profit organization. You don't have to give us exclusive rights either, just permission to display your work. What we would like is an image of at least 6 megapixels, a title and background details (location, time, date, etc.) for the photo and a brief description/paragraph of how it relates to a particular topic. Don't forget to provide your contact details so we know who to give the proper credits. Since I know that there are many members on DP who are not just located in the UK, but who live/travel around the world I think it would get a global outreach.

Also, I'd like to hear your suggestions and thoughts. Especially from members of DP, since I've never started any form of contest before and I don't think anyone in the unit has, it would be nice to hear some advice of how to get things rolling.

PS: The Organization has it's own organizational level photo gallery, however to submit photos for that gallery is another thing with copyrights, licenses, fees and other issues and they are another unit.

This is very interesting ALwin, until you posted this I had never even heard of your Organisation, but then Im not exactly read up on current affairs or politics or anything like that. However, in the industry I am working in, I have noticed a slow increase (but still an increase) in women and quite a large increase in immigrant workers (that last may be a little unfair as my the industry I work in is international by its very nature). I work in the offshore industry, predominantly Oil and Gas but more and more renewable energy these days. Traditionally offshore work has always been the realm of men and if there were any women they were generally restricted to catering side of things. These days however, you will see more women in engineering and managerial roles. These days you will quite likely find the catering and lower deck positions on vessels (and some bridge positions) crewed by Russian/Croatian/Polish/Romanian people along with quite a large smattering of Philopinos, sometimes to the disgruntlement of native nationalities (depending on the operating company nationalities). Whether this is as a result of these people being cheaper to employ and/or are willing to do longer trips, Im not in a position to say. But I can say that there is definitely an increase.
If you do manage to get this competition off the ground, I for one would be interested in seeing what is entered and will, if I can, be putting in entries myself.

All I can say for now ALwin is good luck in getting this off the ground!

Yup that's one of the things about the ILO, not that many people outside of government offices and employers'/employees' unions know about it. Unlike UNICEF, UNESCO, etc. where the moment you mention the name everyone seems to recognize them. After the International Postal Union, the ILO is the oldest international organization that is related to the UN, and older than any other UN related organization. The ILO was formed after 1918 along with the League of Nations, and one of the few organizations to have survived after the League was dissolved when WWII started and replaced with the United Nations after WWII.

And we will appreciate if you are planning to contribute photos, the person who manages this database is the official photographer of the organization and a friend of mine. I think the organization actually pays people who submit photos to the database, as long as it meets certain requirements and the content of the photo relate to any of the organization's area of work. At the moment, I have to focus more on redesigning the website for this project of theirs and introduce new features. But I am getting more support for the 'Call for Media' and for starting some contests.
