I have fallen heir to some lens used by a photographer who used only film cameras.
I am a newbie and considering buying a digital camera. Will these lenses be usable on a digital camera?

Possibly. Many digital SLRs will accept the lenses from film cameras. The lenses may have to be focussed manually and metering may not work with them. If you can provide more detail of the lenses I'm sure a more specific answer will be forthcoming.

Probably... What Camera are you thinking of buying?
No reason for them not to work, of course depending on the age of the lenses you may not get Autofocus, IS etc.
The other thing to remember is that when you buy your DSLR it will likely
have a sensor size that is smaller than 35mm film. This will effectively magnify the focal length of any lens by a factor (dependent on camera) but usually appx 1.5x e.g. a 50mm lens will become a 75mm lens on a Canon 40D

Screams No No No No No. The smaller sensor does not magnify the image, effectively or otherwise.
The smaller sensor has the same effect as cropping the centre section of an photo taken with a 35mm film camera. That centre section is exactly the same size whether digital or film camera is used. The cropped image has a narrower field of view, but I repeat is not magnified. Any magnification only takes place at the printing/viewing stage.
As you might guess, this is a subject that really winds me up.

Who said anything about image...I said 'magnify the focal length' perhaps 'increase' would have been a clearer term?
... although the definition of the word 'magnify' is ('To cause to appear greater')
either way... you will likely as not get less stuff in your frame with a digital camera as you would have wiv a film camera... unless you buy a 'Full Frame' camera such as a Canon 5D, 1Ds or a Nikon D3
