Yeah I need a new website.
Mikayladesigns.net is up on August 23rd.
&& I either Renew it or get a new one.
But like... I want it to be a design site
an art site
and a photography site.
Like...mikayladesigns just sounds like a design site.
Currently im studying an photographer
but he does design and art.
&& he has labled his stuff nopattern.
so it can be anything.
So..I need a name/lable thing like nopattern.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

I'm in a similar position. I don't have any issues about my name, but apart from anything else, I've known people who've been on both sides of the net, so to speak.

I've found that if you use an 'alias', aka, not your real name, clients (or potential clients) may treat you differently as opposed to if you used your full (or partial) name. I know of many wOnebsites that use alias' for their domain, but they turn out to be kids with nothing better to do than make a website. Its good for the privacy side of things, but if you want to sell anything or do business through it, they'll have to know your name at some point.

On the other hand, a domain like "johndoe.com" may reassure people to as who you are. Many professional photographers and likewise use this kind of name for the site, and clients may think "Oh, this one seems reliable."

Its your call really. But from expirience, I know that a "myname.com" domain would be better if you want to do business through it. Hope that helps!

Domain name vs site hosting

Postby clupica on Thu Oct 11, 2007 10:58 am

What is really the issue here? Domain names generally cost less than 5£ / year (for a .com) and here in Switzerland where everything is expensive, I can get a domain for 22.- CHF / year (about 6£).

Some hosting companies will even give you a free domain name as part of their promotion. I have accounts at two different hosting companies and both offer an unlimited number of domains per hosting account and an unlimited number of subdomains; like art.myphotography.co.uk. The domains and sub-domains are completely configurable and my service providers offer one-click install to add things like phpBB (which is the software running this forum), and Joomla (a content management system much like the one to run dphotographer).

Spend $25 and get 4 dot com addresses. Use one for personal stuff and the other for fun and profit. That's what I do. I currently have 5 domains running on Bluehost.com and another 3 or 4 on dreamhost.com but I have only 2 hosting accounts.

If all of this is greek, latch on to a friend that does websites and pick their brain.

examples of sites I have on a single hosting plan:
http://www.north-meadows.com (site I built for my sister)
http://www.siteplus.ch (site of a now-defunct business I tried to start)
http://www.lupicas.com (family / hobby site)
http://www.lupica.us (My recent bicycle tour of the LOire River Valley)
http://jolimont.lupicas.com (fictious B&B, example of sub-domain)

regards
Charlie
