adobe photoshop

Is it difficult to learn Adobe Photoshop on your own, without taking a class? I've read that it can be useful in creating compositions for drawing and painting. Do you think I could teach myself with the software and books or videos from the library? Also, what other uses does Adobe Photoshop offer for the visual artist (painters, not photographers)?

Hi Amaretha,
Photoshop can be fairly easy to get to grips with once you have an understanding of the basics. Maybe consider taking a beginners course at your local college and check out Imagine's Photoshop mags, Advanced Photoshop and Photoshop Creative, their advertising banner can be found on our site but here is a link for each:

Photoshop is a great tool for photographers and artists and is worth spending some time learning. There are also some great books out there and video tutorials online which can help you learn different and perhaps difficult techniques as you go...
Good luck, :D

I am totaly self taught with photoshop and all the other creative suite (illustrator, indesign etc) i have manged to do this through books and videos.

the classroom in a book series from adobe i found a good starting point and from there i have used videos on youtube to help me learn specific elements within photoshop.

these programs have huge potential and i would profess to know how to utilise their full potential but definately have learnt to use them to a sufficient level and entirely at my own pace, which i find is often the best way to learn.

which ever path you take good luck.

Hi Amaretha!
I got that program a while ago along with an old JASC paint shop pro disc and being of the old photo generation 35mm film slr's that is,I found it quite hard at first, but just monkeyed around with it for a while by using old images that I did not have the use for any more. I'm not sure if your manipulating image's or not but I found that experimenting with the menu's and the drop down boxes helped a bit (book inc) but still learning for someone at 49.. might be better to try an evening class at a local college or uni! there are lots offering help ...even online!!

Some people learn faster being taught, others teach themselves faster. I'm one of those that learn a lot more on my own than being taught. :D

I had never took any lessons or class about Pshop, I stared in the time when the newest version was 4.0 and bought a quite big book about it and from there I know how to work with the tools. Everything else came with the time. And if you are determine you can teach your self too. Pshop is offering so much not only for photographers. It is a tool for every artist. And if you have pen tablet you options are infinitive.

Like many others here, I'm self taught in photoshop. It's not the easiest program to get your head around but I found I hit a tipping point where once I understood layers and masks specifically, it all started to flow naturally, and I really started getting some power out of the application.
I much prefer to be taught and I'm much slower when I have to read a whole chunk of text. So I found video tutorials to be extremely useful as opposed to big reference books. There is an absolute wealth of information online so you will have no shortage of material. It's just a matter of being patient and slowly working through it all.
Having said all that, I'm a photographer and not a graphic blacklisted_site/painter, so I can't help you with how useful photoshop is in your line but bear in mind it is the industry standard.
Hope this helps! ;)

Plenty of advise, ebooks and tutorials on line - I would just dive straight in as most of the basic functions are straight forward and the help section can get you going on the others. :)
