Flash gels and flash gel holder

Postby SillyEddy on Thu Sep 23, 2010 10:38 pm

So I'm thinking of doing some more creative photography, funky lighting, that kind of thing. I noticed a lot of people reccomending Rosco Strobist Collection gels. Is this a good set to go with?

When using them with a Canon Speedlite (430EXII is the one in mention) can I just slot them into the front housing between the flash glass and the built in diffuser? Would you reccomend an actual gel holder? If so, which ones are there? I've seen a few clear ones but they were all on a Nikon flash - What could I use for my Canon flash?

Any other reccomendations are appreciated.

Cheers

you can if your up to it get gel offcuts from your local theatre

Ask for the technical manager/Technical staff and ask very very nicely if they have any gel offcuts they dont want you almost always end up with a strip thats too small to use in the lanterns from the big sheets supplied but would be plenty for many many flashguns

Lee 119 (a nice wram blue) or 181 congo which is a purply deep blue 124 (a bright green) and 106 primary red are my favs for this sort of thing then all you need is sticky tape or jam the gel between flashgun lens and the flip up wide angle plate if your flashgun has them.

cant get lee or rossco gels for free??? if the tech staff are too busy/tired/stressed out then start eating a popular brand of sweets and use the wrappers after all its just coloured plastic and you get free gels and a treat at the same time result and you can use more than one wrapper at a time to make stronger colours

The lee and rosco gels remember are designed not to melt (too quickly...) in high powered stage lanterns pushing 500 to 2.5kw through them your colours will last on a flashgun no problem

hope that helps

I got my gel packs from www.flashgels.co.uk

Reasonably priced and they come with velcro to attach the gels to the front of the flash. I use a speed strap on my flash so I don't have any permanent velcro fixings.
I'm currently working on a new website, but I've got some images on flickr that you can have a look at. I've also been known to waffle a bit on twitter.
