Waterdrops for Critique

Postby paulrstephens on Wed Jun 13, 2012 7:52 pm

Hi guys,

I'd appreciate some critique on my first bash at photographing water droplets. I'd particularly appreciate tips on how to get sharper, clearer and more perfectly round droplets.

Cheers,

Paul

I like the composition and colour in pic 2, and the other two are ok, not super sharp, maybe you need a bit more light but good for the first try.

I really like these. Shots like this are a lot harder than they look to get right.

It's hard to write a critique for these beautiful images. My favourite is second image with red background. I think that background makes this water drop picture very unusual. You are doing great job!

Hi there!

If this is your first time, I have to say that it is very well accomplished. Thumbs up! :)

The first photo tho, it isn't 100% sharp. I dont know the META-data for this shot, but you might just need slightly more power form the flash (which system do you use btw? Speedlights?), to achieve that.
Furthermore is the angle which the photo has been taken, a little to much, in my opinion. Maybe try go place the camera a little lower (like in photo no. 2), and get some kind og horizont as well.

The tones of the first photo is fine, but I wonder what the reflection in the water (in the middle) is? It looks like there are stones at the bottom of the aquarium-thing you used. :) I would have removed that in post processing. (And used 'Liquify' to straightening the "tail from the drop" up.)
Last but not least; What method do you use to gain the drop? Is it by hand or have you made the classic "tube with a ball"-trick? :D If you're doing this by hand, im very impressed.

But it would be nice to know some more about your setup and kit. Explaining to us what you have done, gives us better ways to help you making better and better work. :)

Have a nice day, sir.

Thanks for your comments guys.

In terms of my set-up, it was dead basic. I filled a small sandwich bag with water and pegged it to a frame above a tray of water. I then put a pin hole into the bag so the water drops fall in the same place. I prefocus on the area they're dropping in and then use rapid fire to shoot. I used a speedlite fixed to the camera, bit it's only a cheapo speedlite so I had to lower the power to get quick recycle times.

I'll try it again with increased flash power.

Thanks again,

Paul

This is really an amazing picture but Actually, pics like these can be done much more simply. You need only a water container with a valve which can be set to create single drops at a modest rate. The drops fall through a beam from a laser pointer falling on a photocell.

I love the shots you got. Capturing water is one of the hardest things for me.
