Glass Fibre for studio background

I've seen some interesting accessory in few photo studios. It looks like a sheet of transparent fibre glass which is covering bottom of paper background. I think it's meant to prevent paper background from damage (high heels, dirt).

Do you have any experience with it? How long it lasts, is it easy to clean?
