What Digital SLR Camera Should I Get?

i've been interested in digital slr cameras for a while now, so i'm curious which one to buy. i've never purchased one so i'm not too familiar what to look for. if anyone is familiar with these type of cameras and the differences between all of them that would be great. also where to buy them. any type of help would be great. thanks:)

1) What type of photography do you want to do?
-landscape
-portrait
-macro/close-up
-architecture
etc
or just a typical occasional photographer?

2) Is it only photography or do you want to also do videos?

3) Budget?

4) Size/weight, do you think you will want to carry something that weighs about 1-2kgs and the size of a brick?

5) As to where you can buy one, depending on where you are located there should be some consumer electronics stores or dedicated photography stores.

The Nikon D3100 is a great choice for beginners because it has a very user-friendly guide mode, which gives you handy hints and explanations for the various controls and settings that come with DSLRs. This model comes with HD movie mode, but if this is a feature that doesn't concern you then you could opt for the Nikon D3000 (the D3100's predecessor).

It's best to shop around on the Internet for the best deals and prices, but you can always pop into your local Jessops to try out the camera first hand. If you take a memory card with you, then you could take a few photos in the shop to see whether you like the quality once you load them onto your computer.

I would suggest the Nikon Coolpix P100.

Call it a bridge camera, superzoom, whatever-just don't call it a "point and shoot" because it is sooo beyond that disparaging ( at least in the US) title.

Even if you could snag a gently used Coolpix P90, that wouldn't be an entirely bad idea either-save you some $$$!

The point being, when you master either one of these cameras, then you will be more confident when you go after a "Pro" rig!
