The brand is generally based on your preference only and you could practically choose anything between the two. Most of the inclinations you will have is only what you want to use and have hanging on your neck.

I have a Nikon D90 and though some people are saying that I could have gotten better with a Canon of the same price range, I am good with this one and would definitely never look back.

Price-wise, I think Nikon is a fine choice. I can't buy a Canon, so I'm eyeing on Nikon now. When it comes to quality photos, Nikon's proven to offer quality. My friend has a Nikon camera and I've only heard good comments about it.

Dont just read on them, go into a store and handle them, see which one fits you, see which one has controls that make the most sense to you....consider the lens line up..consider what type of photography you want to do....everyone has their opinions on the best camera(s)...but YOU will be the one using whatever it is you wind up with.

I like the Canon's image quality, size, and so I may be a bit biased. An option to confuse you even more .. in this price range, you might also fancy checks, has recently been cut in half, and accept the Nikon lens Fuji S5 Pro.

The brand of camera is not important. Go to your local camera dealer, with a fixed budget, and handle various different models. I think your only question need be, do I want interchangable lenses, or will a fixed lens (bridge camera) suit me better. Buy the one which you think is the best for your style of photography. Remember you want to be a photographer NOT an equipment junkie. :)

Canon 550D, personal recommendation. Take a photography or record video.
Will work good for different needs.
