Image for Commercial Use

Postby dirksmith on Wed Nov 09, 2011 12:31 pm

A printing company have contacted me regarding one of my pictures they seen online and want to use it on a calendar for a client. How do I work out what to charge for it's use and also make sure it isn't passed on to third parties and used without my approval.

On the one hand I'm thrilled that someone wants to use it but on the other it feels like I'm losing control of the image.

If they do not have a contract for you to sign, then you shout definitely set out your guidelines for your image usage. i.e One time usage for the said product, additional costs for any extra print run-ons of the calendar, not to use your image for any other product without prior permission by you

As for cost, this kind of depends how many calendars they plan to print and who the client is. If they're a big deal, then you'll be able to charge a good rate. If it's just a local business then I doubt they'll be much budget for images.

You can always ask them what their fee is and then negotiate. :D

The AOP have published a good book called 'Beyond the Lens' which covers all of this stuff in depth. PM me your email address if you like and I'll send over my own T's & C's for you to have a scan of.

Cheers
