DNG Dong

Postby Richampton on Wed Jul 27, 2011 9:49 am

Hi all

I was just wondering if there is any substantial difference or benefit between the newish DNG format and using the cameras native RAW files? I understand that the DNG format is to give an industry standard for compatibility, and apparantly offer lower file sizes but is there any advantage or disadvantage when it comes to editing, from an image quality, detail retention point of view?

Have a great week

Apart from the matter of making files compatible for years, I'm not sure what advantage DNG has over RAW.

But there is one reason I avoid converting my RAW to DNG: converting. I'm sure Adobe has created top notch algorithms to translate RAW file data into DNG but I would rather keep my RAW files to be 100% sure.

DNG does not, and cannot record the proprietary color information that camera manufacturers embed within their RAW files. The manufacturers simply won't provide information on how to decode that information.

So if you're using Nikon's Capture NX (as an example) to process your .nef (or whatever the extension is nowadays) files, you'll get better color than if you converted to DNG and processed those files.

Thanks guys

Interesting info Medley thanks for that. Im currently using Sony so will read further about the colour information you mentioned. It doesn't seem to provide any real benefit at the moment - even file size difference isn't worth the extra workflow

Have a great weekend
