Beware! Picasa saturates!!!

Postby ALwin on Tue Jan 04, 2011 2:13 pm

I like Picasa because it's free and has face recognition and other features for sorting my photo albums however recently I've noticed something with the latest version that made me want to move to another application.

I edit my RAW files in Adobe Lightroom until the photos have become what I want, however I recently noticed that the JPEG files I export from Lightroom onto my drives for sending to my friends or clients do not appear correctly in Picasa, colors have been made more saturated by Picasa when looking at them on my screen. Skin tones that I have edited in Lightroom look like color blobs in Picasa. The differences have been subtle and I've never noticed them until a recent photo shoot that was done under tungstun lighting with the scene having lots of red and orange tones.

What colour space are you exporting to?

sRGB as always for my final output JPEGs.

Actually I found a solution, I had to open Picasa and turn on 'use color management' in the Menu>View> which is off by default. But I think Google needs to improve Picasa because several of my friends and some of my clients use Picasa to preview their photos and most of them would probably be unaware of what 'color management' is or what color profiles are. I'm glad I haven't done that many print jobs yet because if I did I'm sure I will be getting a lot of complaints and questions why their computer shows the photos with 'brighter' colors.
